Hull City Ladies will head to Newcastle tomorrow looking to seal the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division One title. They know that a win will clinch the title and they will be going all out to get the job done with two games to spare.
The Tigresses are on the verge of promotion after putting in one of their best performances of the season last week to see off their main title rivals Brighouse 2-0. Rachel Gay’s side bossed the game from the off and their opponents never looked like scoring. City scored two brilliant goals, through Nat Bell and Katie Thompson, to put them within touching distance of the league title with three games remaining.
The game was built up as the biggest game of the season and quite rightly so. After falling to their first league defeat of the season at Crewe the week before the Tigresses dealt with the pressure brilliantly and played their rivals off the park. They were incredibly disciplined at the back and the clean sheet was just as pleasing as the two goals they scored. To keep two clean sheets against Brighouse this season is some achievement and goes to prove the Tigresses defence has been as gritty and determined as their attack has been sparkling.
Tomorrow they travel to Tyneside to face 9th placed Newcastle United Ladies who have recently pulled themselves towards safety in the division after picking up a couple of wins in April and seeing some results go their way down at the bottom. Last week they registered an impressive 2-0 win away at Crewe and we know how tough an away game that can be as Crewe are the only team to defeat City Ladies in the league this season.
That win ended a run of three consecutive defeats and due to a series of postponements Newcastle have had to play six games in the last three weeks so they may well be suffering from a bit of fatigue. The home side’s main goal threat is likely to come from Stephanie Ord, who has scored 15 goals this season and was on the scoresheet last weekend at Crewe, and Megan McKenzie who has netted 12 goals this season. The Tigresses defended brilliantly last week though and if they replicate that tomorrow they will be confident of nullifying the threat Newcastle will aim to pose.
We all know the league title that the whole club has aimed for this season is within touching distance and we all hope they can get the win they need tomorrow. Rachel Gay and Danny Johnson will have been banging home the message all week that there is no room for complacency and if the players can replicate last weeks performance they should have no trouble in securing the league title at the first time of asking.
One thing is for sure we will be there to bring you all the action and reaction to what will fingers crossed be the win that sees the Tigresses crowned champions!
