Tigresses unbeaten record gone but rivals slip up too

Hull City Ladies 17 game unbeaten streak in the league came to an end yesterday as they were beaten on the road by Crewe Alexandra Ladies. Luckily for the Tigresses both of their title rivals also lost so it’s as you were at the top of the FA Women’s Premier League Division 1 North table.

City Ladies got off to the perfect start at Crewe with Captain Jo Symington rounding off her birthday week by putting the Tigresses in front after just five minutes. A fast start in games has been the hallmark of the City Ladies side this season and they controlled the game well in the opening twenty minutes.

When the second goal didn’t come the home side got back into the game and almost equalised before half time when  Georgina Stebbings had a shot saved before Beth Grice saw the rebound blocked by a last ditch tackle.

Crewe came out firing in the second half and the Tigresses looked weary after four tough away games in recent weeks. City did have a chance to double their lead but were denied by a brilliant save from the Crewe keeper. The home side got back on terms midway through the half when substitute Michelle Saunders raced onto a back pass and although Amy Halloran got to the ball first, her clearance hit Saunders and rolled into the empty net.

It looked like City would come away with a decent point until the game was won in the 87th minute. Crewe had been creating chances but City had been able to deal with them until that point. With just three minutes to go though that all changed when a shot heading for the top corner was blocked with a hand by Eden Pedersen, a penalty was awarded and Pedersen was given a straight red card. Stebbings sent Halloran the wrong way to make it 2-1 and end City’s unbeaten run.

Although it is a shame the unbeaten run in the league is over it’s still all to play for especially as both Brighouse and Liverpool Feds both lost yesterday too, going down 2-1 to Morecambe and Bolton respectively. All of that means this Sunday’s game at home to Brighouse is still a MASSIVE potential title decider and we encourage as many of you as possible to come and support the Tigresses.
