Beech at the double as Tigresses hit four past Newcastle

Hull City Ladies went back to the top of the league this afternoon thanks to an entertaining 4-1 home win over Newcastle and a draw between Liverpool Feds and Brighouse. The Tigresses played some excellent football throughout creating a hatful of chances in the process as they recorded a vital win in the chase for promotion.

City Ladies started the game really brightly as they played good passing football from the off. Their first sight of goal came in the 7th minute when Liv Jackson won the ball in midfield before passing to Rebecca Beech whose first touch let her down and the ball rolled to the keeper.

Beech didn’t have to dwell on that for long though as she opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Amy Halloran played an accurate long ball forward to Katie Thompson who pulled the ball back across the box as the keeper approached leaving Beech with a tap in to make it 1-0.

The Tigresses were well on top and continued the create chances. Thompson was involved again as she hit a cross to the back post that Hope Knight headed straight into the arms of the goalkeeper. Newcastle are a decent side though and despite being a goal down they worked their way back into the game.

They almost equalised in the 18th minute when a through ball was met by their striker who hit a shot past the advancing Halloran but luckily it went wide of the post. The visitors didn’t have to wait long to get their goal though. In the 27th minute a Newcastle midfielder was allowed too much space in midfield and she hit a long range shot that went over Halloran and into the net. It was an excellent finish to get the visitors on terms at 1-1

Rebecca Beech was having an excellent first half and she almost turned provider for Hope Knight when she played her through on goal. Knight forced the Newcastle keeper into an excellent save as she hit a fierce shot from a narrow angle. Soon after City Ladies got the goal to put them back in front and it was no surprise that Beech was the scorer. Eden Pedersen hit a ball into the box that was missed by the defender. The ball fell to Beech who turned and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to bag herself a brace.

It could have been even better for the Tigresses before half time when Katie Thompson hit a curling shot from the edge of the area that was heading for the top corner. Beech’s strikers instinct got the better of her and she headed the shot onto the bar and was flagged offside! That was the final action of a breathless first half.

The Tigresses started the second half just as well as the first and almost extended their lead in the 50th minute. Katie Thompson played a one two with Beech and was in on goal down the right hand side. She lobbed the keeper but her shot went agonisingly wide. Captain Jo Symington was the next to have a chance when Sophie Stamp played a ball over the top to her but she dragged her shot across goal and wide.

The Tigresses dominated the second half and kept creating chances. Thompson saw another shot saved before the impressive Newcastle keeper saved them again as she denied Knight and Beech with a brilliant double save. Thompson was involved in everything today and she ended up walking wounded as she clashed heads with a Newcastle defender. She soldiered on with a comical bandage round her head so maybe some of her teammates will stop calling her soft now!

Thompson denied by the Newcastle keeper

Sophie Stamp had a growing influence on the game and she dragged a shot wide with around 15 minutes to play. Her accuracy was out the first time but five minutes later it was razor sharp. Meg Render played the ball to her on the edge of the area and she hit a first time bullet of a shot straight into the top corner. A quality goal from a quality player!

Tigresses celebrate Stamp’s goal

With a couple of minutes to go substitute Rachael Ackroyd put the icing on the cake. Nat Bell hit a brilliant pass to her she rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net to seal a 4-1 win. It was a score line the Tigresses deserved as they played some excellent football today.
