There has been a lot of talk about Nigel Atkins’ transfer tactics, with him going for a winger and a centre half instead of a striker, who everyone is crying out for. I however don’t really believe Hull City need another striker.
The strikers that City have got are perfectly capable of putting in a performance at Championship level, especially with Abel Hernandez nearing his return to full fitness. Also, Nouha Dicko has proven on occasions throughout the season that he has the ability to cope, especially in his display at Leeds. He was fantastic. Every City fan knows how good Fraizer Campbell can be, but he just needs to stay fit enough to play 90 minutes, which doesn’t seem like he is at the minute. As soon as City get Abel Hernandez back, they will start firing again I’m sure. An attack of Jarrod Bowen, Kamil Grosicki and Abel Herdnandez would scare any Premier League defence, let alone Championship defence. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but imagine if Hernandez was fit all season – I’m pretty sure City wouldn’t be in the position they are had he been fit all of this time.
To be honest, I think Atkins is right to sort the defence out – it is an absolute shambles. Michael Hector is not good enough, Dawson is still good but he is getting a bit past it, I’m not an Ola Aina fan, but I do like Fikayo Tomori. Out of the three Chelsea loanees, he is the one most likely to push into the first team. A new and experienced centre back is exactly who we need, a certain Harry Maguire? Would be nice wouldn’t it. But in all seriousness, the defence really needs looking at – that is where the problems are coming from this season for sure.
The wing is another position where City really must improve. There is not much impetus from the wide areas, since both full backs aren’t really attacking fullbacks, so a winger could be exactly what City are after. Kamil Grosicki is fantastic but his heart clearly isn’t in it, so a replacement may be necessary for Nigel Atkins. Again, City need someone experienced, but need some flair and pace down the side, which is lacking at the moment.
I think City fans have a right to be concerned about the way the season is going, so it is not unusual for them to be begging for fresh faces to give the side a new and improved look.
