Hull City Ladies got the year of 2018 off to the perfect start with a 5-0 thumping of Barnsley Ladies.
That win sees them go top of the Women’s Premier League Northern Division 1 after winning their game in hand. The Tigresses are now one point clear at the top after 8 wins and a draw from their opening 9 games.
After having their winter break there was no danger of the Tigresses getting off to a sluggish start in 2018. They were ahead inside two minutes thanks to youngster Eden Pedersen. Rachel Gay’s side flew out of the traps and Barnsley couldn’t cope with their visitors.
In no time at all the Tigresses were 2-0 up thanks to captain Jo Symington who continued her excellent season so far. City Ladies will be desperate to finish the job this season and earn promotion and they showed all the desire required today after the Christmas break.
Hope Knight made it 3-0 to the visitors before half time and the result was never in doubt after that. The only question that remained was how many would the Tigresses score to boost their already impressive goal difference.
Another youngster who had a good start to the season was Rachael Ackroyd and she continued her fine form today as she bagged a second half brace. As we have seen all season it is a real team effort at City Ladies and Ackroyd was set up for her two goals thanks to great work from Rebecca Beech and Katie Thompson.
Barnsley provided little or no threat to the Tigresses who strolled to a 5-0 win to take their goal difference to +22. With the Tigresses now top of the pile they will be looking to consolidate their position in the coming weeks. Brighouse are breathing down their necks in second as they sit just a point behind Gay’s side. Liverpool Feds are also well in the hunt as they occupy third place three points behind the Tigresses.
City are on the road again next week when they face Bolton Wanderers before their first home game of 2018 against Morecambe Ladies on 21st January.
