Hull City Ladies have their eyes firmly set on promotion this season and they are off to a flying start in the league.
They sit top of the league and have been scoring goals for fun and haven’t conceded many so all in all it’s been a near perfect start for the Tigresses. They have quality all over the pitch but their midfield trio may well hold the key to promotion for Rachel Gay and her side this season.
The Tigresses have used a central midfield trio so far this season comprised of Sophie Stamp, Emma Westmorland and new signing Ellie Tanser. Each player has a distinct role to play and they have been doing it to perfection so far this season.
We will start in the engine room and it is here that Westmorland plays the “N’Golo Kante” role for the Tigresses. Sitting just in front of the back four Emma has been relentless so far this season as she breaks up opposition attacks and plays the ball forward to get City on the attack. Westmorland is one of the clubs most consistent performers and that has been reflected in her being awarded the clubs Player’s Player of the year and Coaches player of the year in previous seasons. Every successful team needs someone to excel in the midfield engine room and Westmorland has made that role her own for the Tigresses.
Moving slightly further forward we come to Ellie Tanser who has had a remarkable start to her Tigresses career. Signed in the off season Tanser has settled in very well to the box to box role in the City Ladies midfield. If we had to give a player of the season award at this early stage of the season Ellie would be our pick. She has shone in every game we have been lucky enough to witness especially in the away win at Title challengers Brighouse Town. Tanser has two goals to her name already and she will be looking to add to that in upcoming games. She has an eye for a pass and is forming a formidable attacking partnership with Sophie Stamp.
Sophie Stamp is the attacking lynchpin in the Tigresses midfield and has some real class about her. Sophie is a former England international and for the Tigresses to have that sort of quality in their midfield is absolutely pivotal to their promotion hopes. Stamp has one goal to her name so far this season but if we had to compare her to a Premier League midfielder it would be Henrikh Mkhitaryan the assist king. Stamp must be a joy to play with for Rebecca Beech, Katie Thompson and Hope Knight because they know her eye for a pass will create goals for them all season long.
The quality of the Tigresses midfield was clear for all to see during their recent 5-1 demolition of Leeds United Ladies. The City trio bossed the game from the off and manager Rachel Gay alluded to that during her post match interview with FanaticHull., “Sophie’s really cranked it up this season, she really got into 5th gear today and caused them all sorts of problems, Ellie Tanser is miss consistent at the minute and Westy in front of the back four, those three have been superb”.
While we know it’s a team effort every team who wants to be successful needs real quality and we challenge you to find a better midfield trio in the league than Westmorland, Tanser and Stamp. We hope they can continue their great form and if they do the Tigresses may well be celebrating promotion at the end of the season.
