The season came to an end for Hull FC this weekend but the amateur season continues in earnest. It’s time for the latest FanaticHull Rugby League round-up.
For the second season in a row Hull missed out on a place in the Grand Final after a narrow Super League Semi-Final defeat. The Black and Whites went down 18-16 at Headingley as Gareth Ellis and Mahe Fonua’s Hull FC playing careers ended in heartbreak.
Leeds were marginally the better side and their explosive display in the opening 20 minutes paved the way for their victory. Hull took the lead midway through the second half but they couldn’t hold on and it’s Leeds who will contest the Grand Final.
Gareth Ellis brought the curtain down on his legendary career at Headingley with a performance befitting his legendary status. He put in a monumental effort and will have been devastated he won’t be leading Hull out at Old Trafford on Saturday night. Ellis has been one of Hull’s best ever signings and he along with Mahe Fonua will be sorely missed.
The Hull players will be heart broken to lose like that again as they did at Wigan last year. They now have a long pre-season ahead of them before they head to Australia in February.
The Red and Whites may not have had a game this weekend but they have still been in the news as the off season transfer rumour mill goes into overdrive. Tim Sheens has admitted his primary aim is to add size and power to his squad ahead of their return to Super League. Rumours have been reignited suggesting Rovers could be interested in Ben Murdoch-Masila as they were this time last year.
As Rovers were relegated Masila ended up going to Salford but with the departure of Marwan Koukash clubs like Rovers may sense an opportunity to raid the Red Devils and there is no doubt Masila would be a cracking signing. He has a lengthy contract though so this is by no means a done deal.
Masila is not the only Salford player being touted with a move to Craven Park. Greg Johnson and Lama Tasi have also been mentioned as Salford look to cut their playing budget by £300,00 in the wake of Koukash’s departure.
Two of our local sides were in action this weekend in the National Conference Leagues and unfortunately both lost. West Hull were beaten 28-6 at Rochdale Mayfield while Hull Dockers went down 38-8 at Normanton Knights.
Meanwhile in the GMB Hull League, North Hull Knights defeated Lambwath Lions 32-18 while Brownies Bulldogs pulled off an excellent 32-6 win away at Reckitts.
