Hull Ionians opened the new rugby union season on the wrong end of a heavy defeat, conceding nine tries and over 60 points to a powerful and proficient Coventry outfit.
The home side were able to compete with their visitors for the opening half, Ed Falkingham claiming a fine brace of tries, but after the break there was only one winner, Coventry displaying both pace and power to score 38 unanswered points.
It was a disappointing result for Ionians, despite a gutsy performance, but plenty of other clubs will come unstuck against the midlands side if they continue to play like they did at Brantingham.
The new signings fared well enough, but if any of them expected an easy ride they were left to re-consider. It is a big step up to N1 rugby, but that’s what they have come for. Next up is DMP and another testing encounter.
