Tigresses go goal crazy in Rotherham rout

Rotherham United Ladies FC were the latest pre-season opponents for City Ladies at the University of Hull and they were on the end of an 12-0 demolition job by Rachel Gay’s side.

The Midlands Division One outfit were under the cosh from the off, right from the start the Tigresses were on the attack. The first chance fell to Rachael Ackroyd who saw her headed effort come to nothing, but moments later after some great counter attacking play, the Tigresses took the lead through recent signing Hope Knight.

The lead was quickly doubled when some excellent work by Emily Smith resulted in a simple tap in for Ackroyd to open her account for the day.

It was all one way traffic as just seconds later Ackroyd grabbed her second and City’s third within minutes of the restart and after a fine save denied Knight her second of the day, she wasn’t to be denied five minutes later when the deadly duo combined, with Ackroyd firing over a sublime cross for Knight who slotted home to make it 4-0.

The goals continued at regular intervals and minutes later another recent acquisition Liberty Bott scored direct from a corner. Liberty has spent three years in Miami on a football scholarship and looks a star in the making.

As the Tigresses mounted more pressure on their South Yorkshire opponents they netted again two minutes later through the prolific Ackroyd who slammed home her hat trick goal. The half was turning into a nightmare for Rotherham as shortly after Sophie Stamp produced a lovely precise finish after some brilliant link up play to net the 7th of the day.

The Tigresses then had to wait a full six minutes before their next goal when the ever impressive Emily Smith played a fantastic through ball for Lydia Clark to coolly slot home with a composed finish, who shortly after grabbed her second as she followed in a shot that the opposing keeper could only parry into her path.

Just before the break Tigress duo Ellice Jackman and Katie Thompson donned the Rotherham shirt to add a bit of steel to the shell shocked visitors, but the duo could do nothing to stop Emily Smith adding a TENTH City goal before the break.

The second half started with City Ladies under some restrictions to give a more realistic feel to the game and despite playing some good passing football and scoring ten in the first half some of the second half finishing was wayward, until Meg Render blasted an effort from out wide and in off the crossbar. Ellice Jackman who had reverted to her more familiar colours then added the 12th and final goal with a flying header.

Development squad smash Brid

On Saturday the development team travelled up to Bridlington Town LFC and they also enjoyed a comfortable win, running out 8-0 winners. Sophie Wood opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Ellie Harding made it 2-0.

Katie Thompson benefited from some good work by Olivia Jackson to notch the third and shortly after a precision pass from Ellie Tanser saw Ellie Harding grab her second of the day to make it 4-0. Six minutes later great work from Evie Barratt on the left created number five as Katie Thompson rifled in a superb strike.

Thompson’s hat trick goal was next as Amy Knott linked up well and minutes later she made it four for the day with with another fine strike giving the Brid goalie no hope of saving.

The Tigresses rounded off the scoring when some brilliant counter attacking play from a Bridlington corner and Olivia Jackson slotted home the eighth goal of the day.

Some impressive scorelines for the entire Ladies squad but Gay and Johnson will still be wanting more from the Ladies in training and the last friendly of the summer at home to York City next Sunday.
