The first day of the season should be full of hope and optimism but there was none of that today for North Ferriby United. They were demolished 4-0 and ended the game with ten men in one of the worst opening day games in recent memory. This is a nightmare start for Steve Housham who will have to act quickly to get his team ready for their home game on Tuesday night against Harrogate.
It took the home side just three minutes to take the lead. A long ball through wasn’t dealt with by Jake Skelton. Max Leonard was muscled off the ball and went down looking for a penalty. The referee gave a free kick but even that was soft. Leonard took the free kick and curled a low shot around the wall and into the bottom corner. 1-0
Just a couple of minutes later Curzon had doubled their lead and new signing Leonard had doubled his goal tally for the club. The defending for this goal was calamitous and that’s putting it nicely. A long ball through was missed completely by Skelton and Gray and that sent Leonard through on goal. He made no mistake to give the home side a 2-0 lead inside the opening ten minutes.
Ferriby were shell-shocked but to their credit they slowly worked their way back into the game. Alberto scooped a shot over the bar and Callum Rzonca shot just over after great work by Alberto and Ambalu. Danny Emerton was looking dangerous and he created a great chance with a cross low into the box but both Ambalu and Alberto missed it.
Despite creating several chances Ferriby failed to take any of them and trailed 2-0 at the break.

The start to the second half was sluggish from both sides but Curzon extended their lead with their first chance of the half. Niall Cummins capitalised on more slack Ferriby defending to score a simple goal and seal the win for the hosts.
Ferriby continued to try and find a goal and created some half chances. Alberto had a shot brilliantly saved and Curtis Bateson saw a shot blocked. Danny Emerton really was having a good game despite the score line and he terrorised his marker in the second half, unfortunately though neither of the strikers got on the end of any of his crosses.
Things got worse for Ferriby in the 74th minute. Mark Gray likes a challenge we all know that but when he dived in recklessly right in front of the referee there was only going to be one outcome. He was given his marching orders and rightly so. Mark is not a dirty player but he got that tackle badly wrong and deserved to walk.
The Villagers were now praying for the final whistle but Curzon weren’t finished and they put the icing on the cake when Matthew Crothers scored a beautiful goal from wide on the left. This compounded an awful day for Ferriby and the referees whistle put them out of their misery a few minutes later.

Steve Housham and his players don’t have long to dwell on today’s defeat and that might be a good thing. Harrogate are the visitors to the EVM Stadium on Tuesday and they hammered Nuneaton 4-0 today so it doesn’t get any easier for Housham and his side.
