Four Robins players have extra incentive to finish the season well after being named in the provisional Scotland squad for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup to be held Down Under in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in October and November this year.
Scottish regular squad members Danny Addy and Ben Kavanagh are joined in Steve McCormack’s initial squad by youngsters Kieran Moran and exciting winger Will Oakes.
The Bravehearts will be led again by Huddersfield half back, Danny Brough who has regularly been linked this season with a move to Craven Park, but with the signings of Danny McGuire and Chris Atkin in recent weeks may finally have ‘killed off’ the persistent rumours.
Uncapped Moran has enjoyed a fine loan stint with York City Knights and Will Oakes has been in and around the first team squad all season. Addy and Kavanagh have both pulled on the Blue of Scotland 14 times, so will bring invaluable experience to the squad.
Also in the squad are more familiar names from our patch, former Rovers loanee Dale Ferguson makes the squad as does Frankie Mariano and Adam Walker.
There is also a sprinkling of current NRL stars headed by North Queensland Cowboys duo Lachlan Coote and Kane Linnett who are joined by St George centre Euan Aitken, Penrith hooker Peter Wallace and ex Huddersfield and current Newcastle Knights back rower/centre Joe Wardle.
The players will join up with McCormack’s squad as and when their club commitments end. They will then be allowed a short holiday before regrouping ahead of their first Pool B games versus Tonga on the 29th October in the tropical Northern Queensland city of Cairns were the heat and humidity of the early Australian summer will undoubtedly be a factor.
The Bravehearts will then jump ‘the Ditch’ to take on New Zealand in Christchurch on November 4th before tackling Samoa back in Cairns a week later (11th November).
