Tigresses bear their teeth in preseason win

Hull City Ladies made the short journey West to take on Castleford White Rose AFC in their 4th preseason friendly on the back of a defeat to Huddersfield Town Ladies hoping to find their goal scoring touch that has eluded them at times this summer.

On Sunday against Town Rachel Gay’s side produced some fantastic football but couldn’t find the back of the net. Only Rebecca Beech breached the Town rearguard in a 1-4 defeat with the quality of the finishing been the difference between the Tigresses and their loftier opponents on that occasion.

Fast forward to Wednesday evening, the Tigresses struggled with the uneven playing surface in the opening minutes, until in the 21st minute great play from back to front saw Katie Thompson lay off the final pass to Emily Smith who’s shot struck the crossbar, but a minute later striker, Rachael Ackroyd latched onto a smart through ball to opening the scoring for the Hull outfit.

The Tigresses were dominating and only a tremendous save from Castleford from a Smith curling shot and away for a corner kept it at one. It was all City Ladies and on the half hour mark Katie Thompson smashed a free kick from 45 yards out onto the Cas crossbar AGAIN.

With 5 minutes to the break the Tigresses doubled their lead after some great 1 and 2 touch passing resulted in young Natalie Bell slotting in the second of the night.

With a minute remaining of the half Rachael Ackroyd thought she had her 2nd and City’s 3rd of the night but her effort was ruled out for offside.

Gay made a raft of changes to start the second half  and in the 57th minute one of the subs Rebecca Beech latched onto a Meg Render cross with a stylish scissor kick but it was straight at the Cas keeper.

The home side pulled a goal back on the hour mark and the game seemed to meander towards full time until the 85th minute when Ellie Harding produced an outstanding strike over the home keeper’s head to make it 1-3 and right on the final whistle Ellice Jackman capped of a great team display with a fine bullet header to make the final score 1-4.
