Hull FC travel to St Helens on Friday night knowing a win will take them second in the Super League table – at least until Sunday afternoon.
There’s some wrongs to be put right, firstly after the debacle at the Magic Weekend, and then last week, where defeat for Hull was all of their own making.
That though could be interpreted as a positive, as defensively Hull were solid. That scramble on their goal-line was there as was that purple patch in attack. It just came a little too late. Hull always have that spell in a game where everything clicks, and as long as they reduce dropped ball and complete their sets they should be looking at two points.
St Helens have had an indifferent year. They’re currently six points off the top four and for them to have any aspiration of making it they need to win. Without Matty Smith though that’ll be difficult. Jon Wilkin’s loss isn’t a blow. Saints fans were actually suggesting on Twitter this week they wish the ban was longer. Says it all.
Hull should be confident. They’ve got the quality both with and without the ball to worry St Helens, but then again everyone thought that up in Newcastle.
Super League is never a formality and the unexpected can become the expected. This makes the competition exciting. It should be a good game, though who will take home the spoils remains a mystery.
