News has emerged tonight that Hull FC have extended the contract of Albert Kelly until at least the end of the 2018 season. Lee Radford took a risk when he threw Kelly a one year lifeline after his chequered past at Hull KR and his previous NRL clubs. 8 appearances and 9 tries later Radford’s risk looks to have paid off in some style and he is therefore delighted to extend the contract of his star man.
Although they may not admit it now there were plenty of Hull FC fans who were sceptical about the signing of Kelly but he has done his talking for himself and Lee Radford on the pitch and Radford is understandably chuffed to bits that Kelly wants to stay with the Black and Whites where he can continue his blossoming understanding with half back partner Marc Sneyd. Radford explained how important it was to keep them both long term.
“Albert’s been really good and he certainly brings that x-factor for us with the ball, We identified last year we needed a running half-back and he has all the attributes we need and complements Marc Sneyd really well. It’s great news for us to have him here and Marc tied down to a long-term deal also because half-backs are hard to find and we’re really happy with the two we have now got.”
“He’s had a good impact since he came in, but he’s only going to get better for us. There’s improvements to be made defensively and it’s when you get to the business end of the season when players of his quality can win you tight games with what he can do for the team.
Radford was also quick to emphasise how happy Kelly is at the club and how he was confident Kelly wouldn’t continue to have off the field issues during his time at the KCOM Stadium.
“He can create something from nothing for the team and that can be huge come the end of the season. He’s really happy here, his partner is really happy and there were never any concerns about losing him because we had the clause in his contract so the decision was always in our favour.”
“He’s been great for us off the field as well as on it and I was always confident that if we got him in our environment there wouldn’t be any issues.
With the deal signed sealed and delivered Radford, Kelly and the rest of the team can look forward to their massive game against league leaders Castleford Tigers at the KCOM Stadium on Sunday.
