News is emerging tonight that will be music to the ears of all Hull FC fans. It is being reported that Hull have taken up their option to extend Albert Kelly’s contract beyond the initial one year deal he signed in the off season. This means that the half back who has been in red hot form this season will be at the KCOM Stadium until at least the end of 2018.
The news comes less than 24 hours after Fox Sports Australia released a story which said that Kelly wanted to return to the NRL for next season and had told his management team to make it known that he was available. Tonight’s news crushes that story though which will be a huge relief to Hull FC fans as the rumour mill had already gone into overdrive as it always does in Hull.
Kelly has been in scintillating form so far this season as he has scored 9 tries in just 8 Super League appearances and Hull have lost only one game in which he has featured. It is therefore not surprising the rumours began to surface with him only being on a one year initial deal. The deal to bring Kelly to Hull FC was a lifeline for the Australian who had indiscretions at Hull KR but Lee Radford was prepared to give him a chance. Radford’s gamble has paid off and Hull have done the right thing by tying their dynamic half back down for at least one more season.
Despite the Fox Sports rumours Kelly is delighted to have signed his new deal and explained he has more to give at Hull FC, “I’m very pleased to have signed my new deal. My girls are happy, I’m happy and I’m really excited for what’s to come,” said Kelly. “I like to think I’m getting back to my best form and with another year under my belt, I think I can get better.”
That will have the Black and White half of the city buzzing with excitement because Kelly has already shown himself to be one of the best half backs in the competition this season. If he carries on this form for the rest of this season and next then Hull may well have more silverware to join last season’s Challenge Cup in the Trophy Cabinet.
