Hull’s golden boy Luke Campbell will fight former WBA lightweight champion, Darleys Perez for the right to face current Champion Jorge Linares at Wembley stadium on 29th April.
The WBA eliminator will be a support act to the much anticipated World Heavyweight title fight between popular Englishman and Luke’s big mate, Anthony Joshua and former undisputed champion Wladimir Klitschko.
The Colombian, Perez 33,(pictured) will on paper prove a stern test for Campbell having fought at the top level and indeed been a World Champion at the weight. Perez lost his title to another English Lightweight, Anthony Crolla by way of a 5th round knockout in their 2nd fight. The first finishing in a draw before Crolla finished the job in the second fight. Interestingly Crolla recently lost two fights by unanimous points decision to the man Campbell and Perez are fighting for the right to meet, Jorge Linares.
Luke is coming up against a fighter with a record of (37fights,33W,2D,2L,) his knockout win ratio of 21 wins coming by way of KO suggest that he has a punch on him whose only other loss on his record (apart from Crolla) came from tough Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa, the former WBA & IBF featherweight champion by a unanimous points decision. As well as having a knock out punch, Perez can take a punch with only Crolla stopping him in his 8 year pro career.
With only the defeat to Frenchman Yvan Mendy the blemish on his CV, Luke has his own impressive record of (F17,16W,1L,0D) of which 13 of the wins were knockouts and some notable performances, especially his last 2 fights when he dispatched Derry Mathews inside 4 rounds and an even better showing in his last fight in February at the Hull arena when he demolished Mexican Jairo Lopez inside 2 rounds. The last two performances have shown how potent Campbell can be, and under the guidance of renowned trainer Jorge Rubio, Campbell has made the Mendy defeat a distant memory albeit a memory Luke himself is keen at some point in the future eradicate altogether by reversing the result.
Starting with this Perez fight, Luke faces a tough route to becoming Hull’s first World boxing champion as well as being Hull’s first Olympic gold medallist but one most definitely he can negotiate, and if and when this happens the boxing fans of Hull can look forward to some mouth watering fights featuring one of our favourite sons. Names on the horizon we can look forward to being matched with Luke include, Linares, Mikey Garcia and Terry Flanagan to name a few but first he must get the job done against Darleys Perez on the 29th.
