The Hull Pirates enter the final weekend of the EPIHL Group B play off series with nothing but pride to play for. Having lost the previous four play off games over the last ten days, make tonight’s game versus the Swindon Wildcats at the Hull arena and tomorrow’s final fixture of the season away to Milton Keynes Lightning are purely academic.
Coach Jason Hewitt will use these games to take a last look at his squad in competitive action before sitting down with the club’s management to decide who stays for next season. Hewitt has urged his men to “show why they deserve to stay at the club and I’m expecting 2 positive performances from the guys”.
Key marksman Andrej Themar is tied up for the 17/18 season and will look to add to his excellent tally of 53 goals and 43 assists to give the Pirates a win that Wednesday’s performance in defeat to Basingstoke deserved.
Looking at other options ahead of the final two games of the season Hewitt confirmed that back up netminder Ash Smith will be given the chance to impress while starting netminder Vlastomil Lakosil takes a well earned rest.
Once this weekend is done and dusted the Pirates coaching staff and management will have some decisions to make regarding the make up of next season’s squad. One rule change to be implemented for next season that may have a bearing on the squad make up is match night imports allowed to ice is dropping from 5 to 3.
The Pirates have the players with ability to make this weekend a double winning weekend and end the season on a little high if they show commitment and enthusiasm that Jason Hewitt will demand.
