Travelling to Forest Green today it was probably only Steve Housham who realistically thought his side could win. Priced 16/1 with most bookmakers The Villagers had conceded 13 goals in their last 3 games and were facing a top 3 side who had only lost once at home all season. Surely there was only one winner?
As many expected the home side started the game on the front foot. They had the first chance but Ferriby’s new loanee goalkeeper Owen Evans was on hand to deny Jake Gosling after a Marcus Kelly cross.
Forest Green were bossing the game but it was Ferriby who almost took the lead in the 20th minute. Ryan Fallowfield was denied by a save from point blank range before the rebound was eventually scrambled off the line.
Just before half time the home side almost took the lead. Fabien Robert turned his man in the box before smashing a shot against the post with Evans beaten. This was a let off for Ferriby as they got to half time with the scores level at 0-0
The home side almost took the lead immediately after the break. Mark Gray did exceptionally well to deny Christian Doidge with a last ditch tackle as he looked to shoot. Doidge had another half chance soon after but this time Evans easily saved his deflected shot.
After absorbing a lot of pressure from the home side throughout the game it was The Villagers who took the lead in the 68th minute. Danny Emerton crossed to the near post and Reece Thompson was on hand to nod the ball home to give Ferriby an unlikely lead.
After that Ferriby stayed incredibly disciplined and kept Forest Green at bay. The home side had lots of possession and looked to create openings but they couldn’t find a way through the resolute Ferriby defence. The Villagers held on for a historic win and arguably the result of the season. They have now given themselves a faint hope of survival after almost everyone had written them off.
