Hull Pirates Group B play off campaign got off to a disastrous start tonight, going down to a 7-0 defeat to the Basingstoke Bison.
Jason Hewitt’s men travelled to Hampshire hoping to do something the haven’t managed to do all season and win on Bison ice, but a long night ensued and started to go wrong on 9:43 when Bison took the lead through a Powerplay goal, when Aaron Connolly took advantage of Pirates Luke Boothroyd sitting out 2 minutes for hooking. The Pirates held up well for the remainder of the 1st period and went into the dressing rooms 1-0 down after the first 20 minutes.
However the first 10 minutes of the second period killed the Pirates as the Bison scored four goals between 21:05 and 29:18 when the Bison powered in 3 goals through Aaron Connolly again, Daniel Scott and Joe Miller. Four became 5 on 35:57 when Ciaran Long scored after good play from Derek Roehl. The flurry of great attacking play and flimsy Pirates defence left the 2nd period ending with the Bison leading 5-0.
Despite been peppered from all angles, Pirates netminder Vlastomil Lakosil held firm until 51:29 when Daniel Scott got his second and Bison’s sixth and the punishment ended on 57:57 when Bison man of the match Aaron Connolly grabbed his hat-trick to complete a 7-0 rout. On a bad night for the Pirates Jon Kirk took the man of the match award for the visitors.
The Pirates must now front up away to Swindon Wildcats on Saturday night to get their play off campaign going. The Wildcats suffered a nightmare of their own in the other group B game going down 5-1 at Milton Keynes Lightning.
In Group A of the play offs Guildford Flames won 3-0 away at Telford Tigers, whilst the Peterborough Phantoms absolutely demolished the Sheffield Steeldogs 12-0!!
