Pirates brought down to earth by Peterborough

After securing the Bradfield Brewery Cup last night with a fantastic comeback that resulted in a win on penalties over Sheffield Steeldogs the Pirates will have been looking forward to getting straight back on the ice tonight against Peterborough Phantoms. Indeed the Pirates picked up where they left off the night before as their leading scorer Andrej Themar netted in the opening minute of the first quarter.

The early lead was quickly cancelled out by Ales Padelek who made it 1-1 minutes later. 6 minutes later two quick Pirates penalties on Nathan Salem for hooking and Luke Boothroyd for cross checking resulted in a 5 on 3 power play goal for the Phantoms. Thomas Norton capitalised on the Phantom’s two man advantage to give them the lead.

Shortly after the Pirates going 2-1 down they suffered another blow as Ryan Watt was given a match penalty for roughing. The Pirates survived losing Watt until the end of the first period to only trail 1-2.

8 minutes into the second period the Phantoms doubled their lead through Ben Russell and the score remained the same until the final seconds of the second period when Phantom’s made it 1-4 courtesy of a Petr Stepanek goal.

Despite the Pirates looking to get back into the game the third period was fairly uneventful until the last two minutes when Tom Stubley of the Phantom’s, Jamie Chillcott and Nathan Salem of the Pirates ended the game sat in the penalty box as the score remained 1-4.

The Pirates have an opportunity to bounce back immediately as they complete their busy weekend with a trip to Telford to face the table topping Tigers with a 6pm face off.
